Most cross-country studies of economic growth, including my earlier research, focus on the determinants of narrow economic variables. The variables most often studied are the growth rate of per capita gross domestic product (GDP) and the ratio of investment to GDP. In this study, my focus is on the determination of quality dimensions of economic development. By quality, I mean factors such as life expectancy, fertility, environmental conditions, income inequality, and aspects of political institutions. The political dimensions that I consider are democracy in the sense of electoral rights, maintenance of the rule of law, and the extent of official corruption. I also look at the determinants of crime, measured by murder rates.
